Skin Care Myths that Aren’t Doing Anything Good to Your Skin

Thanks to the internet we have so many good things. However, you can also find many skincare myths that are doing nothing to your skin. Still, people believe in them. Similar to the old wives' tales, these myths live and cause only damage. We are here to debunk them. Are you with us?

Myth #1: Natural is Always a Better Option in Skin Care

Many people believe that products that are labeled as natural or chemical-free are better for their skin. However, that is one of the most popular skincare myths. You should know what works for your skin before buying any skincare product. Nevertheless, for some people natural products will be great, but for others not so much.

If you have problems with your skin it is better to ask your dermatologist before buying that all-natural creme that all influencers are talking about.

Myth #2: Washing Face with Hot Water Opens Pores

Yes, steam can help with cleansing pores, but that certainly doesn’t mean you should wash your face with hot water. Instead, use a hot towel. The fact is that our pores are always open. You can actually make steam good if you want to improve moisture, treat cracked skin on your lips, etc.

Lukewarm water is perfect for face wash. Though we know how relaxing a hot shower can be, don’t do that to your skin. If your skin is red after the shower you have used too hot water.

Myth #3: You Don’t Need Moisturizer if your Skin is Oily

This skincare myth can actually make your skin even more oily than before. Usually, most cleansers will strip natural oils from the skin, including oily skin as well. So, no matter if your skin is dehydrated or oily you need to use some kind of moisturizer to lock in hydration and keep your skin nourished. Even if your skin is oily, you simply need to choose a lighter moisturizer in order to make your skin healthy.

Myth #4: You Don’t Need Sunscreen If It’s Not Sunny Outside

You will hear every dermatologist shout from the rooftops: SPF is necessary even on cloudy and grey days when you can’t see the sun. Yes, you can actually get burned on cloudy days.

Spending time in the sun without protection can leave you with damaged skin, premature fine lines and wrinkles as well as hyperpigmentation marks. SPF creme should be the last product in your skincare routine. Apply it at least 15 minutes before sun exposure.

Myth #5: More Exfoliation the Better

The more you exfoliate your skin - the better! How many times have you heard this myth? We heard it enough to say it is completely false. Yes, exfoliation is great for our skin, but there is one thing you can do if you exfoliate too much - damage your skin layer, leaving it irritated and inflamed.

How many times a person should exfoliate really depends on your skin type and the type of exfoliator you use. Pay attention to how your skin reacts after exfoliation so you would know if you should continue or not.

Myth #6: Makeup Wipes are Good for Makeup Removal

Makeup wipes are good only in cases of emergency. Because if you have any skin concerns makeup wipes can actually make them worse. A lot of them contain alcohol that can only worsen skin conditions such as oily skin, acne, or sensitive skin.

You should choose a mild cleanser that you can use on a daily basis. If you really want to try out makeup wipes, then try to limit them for long travels or long night-outs.
