How to Find the Best Skin Care Products For You

Have you ever tried to read the ingredients on the backside of your skincare products? If you are nodding, then you have probably been confused ever since. Just a bunch of ingredients that you don’t know absolutely anything about, right? We were wondering - how to find the best skin care products for you?

Unless you have a degree in chemistry, these ingredients can look intimidating. Even though there is a database for all those ingredients (INCI), it is not super friendly for us who don’t know anything about chemical ingredients.

That is why many people reach out and follow those influencers representing a popular brand or more of them. However, it turns out that it is not always the best idea, blindly following what others are buying. Because no product fits all. If something is good for you, it doesn’t mean it suits your best friend.

Luckily for us, there are a few pieces of advice that can make the process of finding the best skin care products for you much easier.

Knowing Your Skin Type

The most important thing you need to determine so you can use the skincare that reflects your skin needs is knowing your skin type. Believe it or not, one of the common problems occurs when people are using products that are not suitable for their skin type.

There are certain ingredients you need to avoid if you have oily or sensitive skin. Acne-prone skin should be treated with caution, yet it can handle a wider range of products.

If You Have: Oily Skin

Look out for products that have alpha hydroxy acids, such as glycolic and salicylic acids. Also, make sure there is hyaluronic acid and benzoyl peroxide. All these ingredients will control the sebum production, while hyaluronic acid provides hydration where needed.

If You Have Sensitive Skin

People with sensitive skin should look out for ingredients that won’t break out their skin. We suggest trying oatmeal, shea butter, and aloe vera.

If You Have Dry Skin

Dry skin can easily become flaky, so you need something that will hydrate and mildly exfoliate your skin. Shea butter and lactic acid are simply perfect for these purposes.

Natural Isn’t Always Better

In the last couple of years, many beauty and skincare products appeared with the label 'natural' and 'organic' on them. However, natural isn’t always better. Just because essential oils are good for your body and skin, doesn’t mean you should rub them all over your face.

Most of the time, reactions on the skin come right because of natural ingredients. Experts warn us that labeling natural and organic products can mean that they have just one or two natural ingredients on their list. This area is not regulated, so be careful when you are buying something from that range of skin care products.

Order of the Ingredients Matter

Have you ever thought about how brands list the ingredients at the back of a product? They list it in order from higher to lowest concentration. Once you know your skin type and what ingredients to look out for, you can read the first five ingredients and see if there is any problematic one.

Popularity Traps

Or don’t fall into the hype, we would say. Not every product that some beauty influencer uses is a good product. Especially for your skin type.

If you have decided to buy a product recommended by an influencer or a friend, you should pay attention to their skin type and how healthy their skin really is.

Many products became popular after some influencers showed them on their social media channels. Some of them, believe it or not, are facing lawsuits. People were having terrible reactions after using them, even though they were promoted as perfect.

So, what can you do? Try out, but first, check out the ingredient list. If you think it is suitable for your skin type - go for it. If not, consult with a dermatologist.

Ingredients to Look For

These are some of the best ingredients to look for in skincare products. This is how to find the best skin care products for your skin.

Sodium Hyaluronate, Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides

All these ingredients have a moisturizing role and can be naturally found in the skin. You should go for serums with hyaluronic acid, while ceramides can be found in lotions and creams.

Glycerin

Glycerin is one of the best ingredients for hydrating. It is recommended for dry and sensitive skin and can be found in most skin care products.

L-Absorbic Acid (Vitamin C)

Vitamin C is a great antioxidant ingredient that will boost collagen production and diminish damage from UV rays.

Retinol

Retinol is perfect for nighttime skincare products. It will work while you sleep, by boosting your collagen production and turning over your skin cells.

Tocopherol (Vitamin E)

Vitamin E works almost the same as Vitamin C. You will get excellent results if you combine both of them.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)

This ingredient is perfect for an evening out skin tone, brightening, reducing wrinkles and fine lines. It should be unavoidable in serums.

If you want to experience how a punch of active ingredients can feel on your face, our Luminous Mighty Punch serum is perfect for all skin types.

Ingredient to Avoid

These ingredients are usually present in products, yet you should try to avoid them if possible.

Sulfates

Sulfates are usually found in shampoos and body washes. They are responsible for all that foam you get when you shampoo your hair. However, they are not good for either hair or skin. Sulfates strip natural oils found in hair and skin, which can lead to irritated and dull hair and skin.

Parabens

Parabens keep the bacterial growth, as they are used as chemical preservatives. However, using products with parabens can lead to hormonal disbalance. Avoid products with paraben, and make sure children are not using ones as well.

Fragrance

You should definitely avoid fragrance/perfumes in skin care products if your skin type is sensitive. The fragrance can cause serious skin breakouts, irritations, redness, and in some cases skin allergies.

Formaldehyde

Even though it became rare to see formaldehyde in skin care products, you can still be cautious. Since it is classified as cancerogenic, it is replaced with different chemicals that can release formaldehyde over time. Those chemicals are quanterium-15, hydantoin, diazolinge urea, and imidazolidinge urea. All these ingredients serve as preservatives.

A Patch Test Can Help

It is always a good idea to take samples and testers from stores you usually buy your skin care products in. That is also a way how to find the best skin care products for you. Doing a patch test is practical for you to see if some products suit your skin type or not.

If you notice any irritations or changes on your skin, stop using it, and try something else. You won’t spend any money in vain, but you will be able to find something appropriate.
